Banking on Customization: Building a Future Proof Network for the WVBA

"Customization means working with what you've got to give me what I need, not forcing me to fit in a pigeonhole or a cookie cutter mold," says Terri Conway, Director of IT and Communications at the West Virginia Bankers Association (WVBA). "That's where Lumos stood out to me." Established in 1891, the WVBA is a major trade association and advocate for West Virginia banks, providing legislative lobbying at the state level as well as education and training for member banks.

The Regulatory Framework

A key issue for banks is that they face a more stringent regulatory framework than before which, says Terri, is "hugely expensive" to comply with. "They are regulated in terms of disaster recovery, privacy issues, anything where there's a security concern," she says. Cyber security is also a huge issue. She adds: "It's crucial that third party vendors such as Lumos fit into that regulatory compliance framework."

Technology is the Answer

Better, faster, more secure technology is the solution to these unique challenges. That's where Lumos Networks has helped, hooking the Association into the Metro Ethernet fiber cabling that already existed within the WVBA's headquarters. Prior to that, the WVBA experienced problems with its DSL service, as Terri explains. "I would have latency, drop off, lag that would cause issues with outside services. Taking care of our website, working on email communications, working with software as a service (SaaS) providers were often problematic for us."

From the technical perspective, what I like is that it works virtually all the time - for us that's great.

Remote Network Solution

As part of the upgrade, Lumos implemented a remote workstation at Joe's home enabling him to connect securely to the WVBA network when he worked from home two days a week. "It's just like being in the office," he says. Terri is also thrilled with the new network. "It's head and shoulders above what we had previously. Having a secure, stable end-to-end connection lets me get my job done better, faster, more efficiently. I have happier people and fewer IT support calls." She adds: "From the technical perspective, what I like is that it works virtually all the time – for us that's great!"
