Johnson explains why JMU chose Lumos Networks
James Madison University is a comprehensive university that is part of the statewide system of public higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is the only university in America named for James Madison. Established March 14, 1908, the university offers programs at the bachelor's, masters and doctoral levels with its primary emphasis on the undergraduate student. JMU provides a total education to students — one that has a broad range of the liberal arts as its foundation and encompasses an extensive variety of professional and pre-professional programs, augmented by a multitude of learning experiences outside the class- room. The university has been a coeducational institution since 1966.
Educational Practices Demand More Bandwidth
As the use of the Internet for educational and administrative work continues to grow, our need for reliable, scalable Internet service has become a high priority. Bandwidth demand had outgrown our available Internet bandwidth capacity and slow Internet response was impacting the business of JMU. Many of our core services are located in the cloud and accessed via the Internet, plus faculty has embraced YouTube and other video based resources as a teaching tool.
Lumos Networks Offers Reliability and Scalability
Starting with 500Mb of Internet bandwidth, Lumos installed a new 10 Gigabit Metro Ethernet ring, provided us a 1 Gigabit Internet service and a separate 1 Gigabit NLR/I2 service to Ashburn, Va. Lumos also provides 100Mb connections to 8 JMU locations via their Harrisonburg network ring. We have a solution that will scale into the future and meet JMU's continued demand for high bandwidth service. Our Internet services provide a good quality of service in terms of speed and reliability. Lumos built out a redundant service including a secondary service in case of disruption. This allows the business of JMU to continue to grow and meet the needs of our customers.
Lumos Networks Connects JMU for the Future
For Lumos to provide for the current and future needs of the University the local Harrisonburg capacity had to be built out and completed quickly. During implementation there were no challenges at all. Migration over to the new service was uneventful and completed in the agreed timeframe. As our needs have expanded, Lumos has continued to enhance the local network. With their latest expansion they exceeded our requirements, by implementing a 10 Gigabit ring using 100 Gigabit switches to meet our needs into the future.
